How Often Should We Clean Our Clothes?

NEWSLETTER
JULY 2025

Dear JEEVES Clients,

Wishing you a lovely July and, as always, thank you for trusting JEEVES with your wardrobe.

In this month's newsletter, I wanted to share a thought that often comes up in conversation with my clients and friends, how often should we clean our clothes? Whether you're tossing items into the laundry machine at home or deciding when to send pieces to your dry cleaner, striking the right balance is key. And in a place like Hong Kong, where the climate, humidity, and seasonal changes affect how garments wear out and age, it's something I thought worth writing about.

Let's start with the basics
For items that sit close to the skin, such as undergarments, socks, gym wear, and sleepwear, it's best to change these after each use. These pieces absorb sweat and oils quickly from contact with your body and re-wearing them can lead to discomfort, irritation or long-term fabric damage. It's also much more hygienic to rotate these daily and then wash them all in a batch before reusing.

What about day-to-day wear
Shirts, blouses, and dresses can usually go two wears depending on activity and length of wear. In this summer heat, once you've broken a sweat, I'd recommend sending them to the laundry machine, just be sure to check the care labels first. Trousers and skirts tend to last a bit longer, up to four or five wears. Denim is even more forgiving. Unless visibly stained, jeans can go several wears before needing attention. That said, any visible stains on any of your garments should be treated straight away, ideally by a professional, before they set in or cause oxidation and become impossible to remove.

Tailored and formal pieces
Jackets, suits, and occasion wear don't need frequent cleaning. In fact, frequent dry cleaning can age fabrics prematurely, especially if the dry cleaner uses harsh solvents or lacks proper education in delicate cleaning cycles and handling of sensitive fabrics. Unless there are visible stains, odours, or perspiration buildup in the armpit area, we recommend holding off. A good airing or spot clean by a trusted professional often does the trick.

A balanced approach is best
There's no universal rule when it comes to how often to clean your clothes, but I hope the above list gives you a better idea when you're going through your wardrobe.

At JEEVES, we're strong advocates of thoughtful garment care and extending the life of each piece that arrives at our facilities. We clean with purpose, not habit. And if you're ever unsure, just ask us. We're always happy to advise on whether a garment needs a clean, restoration, alteration, or all three.

As always, feel free to reach out to me personally with any wardrobe questions or comments. I'd love to hear from you at jeeves@jeeves.com.hk

Kind regards,
